FOREHAND SHOT
TEACHING STEPS AND CUES
STEP 1
Non racquet foot slightly forward
Body facing sidewall
Body position well over the ball
Bent knees
Elbow close but not tight to body
STEP 2
Face of the racquet is square to the ball
Hit with a snap of the wrist and little forearm drive
Make contact with the ball at knee height a little behind the front foot
Can vary the face of the racquet to slice or top the ball
STEP 3
Follow through with forward motion
Racquet moves across the body
Snap or wrist gives power
Keep non-racquet forward during whole swing
BACKHAND SHOT
TEACHING STEPS AND CUES
STEP 1
Grip same as forehand stroke
Racquet foot forward
Facing sidewall
Grip racquet so the head is angled slightly back from the surface of the floor
Head of the racquet above the wrist
To make it easier extend thumb along back of Racquet for extra support
STEP 2
Dont lift elbow when contacting the ball
Meet ball a little behind the leading foot
Turn wrist as racquet moves forward
Keep elbow close to body
Follow through with forward motion
Snap of the wrist and shift weight to forward foot
Can vary the face of the racquet to slice or top the ball
STEP 3
Swing racquet forward on same plane (dont pull the racquet up)
Hit ball low and follow through low
Keep eye on the ball
Keep well balanced
